Once you’ve got your foil, your board, there’s the question of sailing? What to choose? Cambers? Camless? Large or small?
It all depends on your ambitions: racing/power or lightness/ease.
Cambers provide power and stability at high revs. However, they also mean heavier sails. The greater weight means you need more wind and speed before you can take off with a foil.
A sail without cambers will be much lighter and more flexible. It offers more dynamism for easy take-off and flight. On the other hand, it will deliver less apparent wind at low speeds, making it slower in this area.
For higher speeds, a sail without cambers will need to be fairly rigid, with a taut leech, to be effective.
With or without cambers, you’ll want to choose a slender sail rather than a compact one. Indeed, a wide, supple head could create movement which would have instability repercussions on the foil (pendulum effect).
It’s all a question of weight. The smaller the glider, the lighter it will be, so the sooner you can take off and fly.
Conversely, the larger the sail, the more weight it will carry, so you’ll need more wind to fly.
However, once airborne, a larger surface area will bring more apparent wind and therefore speed.
The more sail area we put on a small, light float, the more wind we need to lift off the water.
